The Family Center

We take time to stay connected with our family. It means a lot to us to keep life sacred and filled with deeper meaning. It can go by so quickly. We are all in the same boat. Join other parents, children and youth as we search for meaning and hope.

AUGUST 2007

OUR WHOLE LIVES (A UNITARIAN UNIVERSALIST SEXUALITY COURSE): I didn’t really know what Our Whole Lives was going to be like at first.  I just knew it was a kind of “sex ed” class, and I didn’t want it to be like the ones we’d already had in school.  It wasn’t.  It turned out to be a whole lot better.

For one thing, we learned a lot more than we ever learned in school.  That stuff was all really basic and general, but in OWL we learned and talked about the details, whether it was about biology or protection or STDs or what it was like to go on dates, to have a boyfriend or girlfriend, or whatever.  And it was good to hear that other kids – girls and boys – had a lot of questions of their own.  I learned stuff I didn’t even know I didn’t know.

It was a long program, but everybody stayed with it.  We even got to have lunch together every Sunday (that was the best part), and by the end of it I think we were all much more confident about our bodies and our expectations and our plans for the future.  It was fun sometimes and hard sometimes and silly sometimes…but it was worth it.
